Five carry-on essentials for your next

One secret to a successful trip is packing. Having the right things in your bag can really make -- or break -- a vacation.

But some people often overlook the importance of packing one thing: a carry-on.

When preparing for a trip, packing your carry-on bag is an essential part of the process. Carry-ons can be a lifeline when flying and should contain everything needed to keep you comfortable, entertained and safe.

To ensure an enjoyable flight, these five essentials are must-haves in your carry-on bag:

  1. Travel documents: Your passport, boarding pass, and any other important travel documents should be in your carry-on bag. This way, you have easy access to them and can avoid any issues with a potentially lost checked bag.

  2. Entertainment: Long flights can be the perfect place to catch up on a show, get work done, read a book or other ways to pass the time. Headphones, your personal device(s) -- like a cellphone or laptop -- or other means of entertainment should be in your carry-on.

  3. Snacks: Airplane food can be hit or miss, and there's a chance it's not to your liking, so bringing your own food isn't a bad idea. Things like granola bars, chips or other handheld snacks are good ideas to put in your bag so they're at your disposal if you want them during the flight.

  4. Toiletries + Medications: Keeping a small bag of your favorite or must-have toiletries and medications is a good idea in case your bags are delayed or lost on your trip. They're also helpful in case you need to freshen up during a layover or when you land. Your toiletry bag should include deodorant, toothpaste, a toothbrush and any other items needed to stay fresh. Daily medications should also be in your bag so you have them when you need them. Tip: Be sure any liquid items are under 3 oz or they won't make it through security.

  5. Change of clothes: In case your checked luggage gets lost or delayed, having an extra change of clothes can come in handy when needed. When choosing the extra outfit to pack, be sure to choose what matches your plans for the first 24 hours of your trip. If you plan to land and go sightseeing, be sure to pack something that you'll be comfortable walking around in. Tip: Don't overdo it. If you're going to a warm place, choose an outfit with fabric that isn't too bulky and won't overpower your carry-on bag.

By packing your strategically, you'll be prepared for a comfortable flight and have what you need in case your bags are lost or delayed. This will help you start your vacation with less stress, kicking off a great trip.
