How to choose between Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, CLEAR and Mobile Passport

Airports seem to be busier than usual lately. With hours-long security lines and even wait times at the pre-clearance or speed-through options, more travelers are interested in special programs that increase the chances of getting to their destination quicker.

Among those options in the United States are TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, Mobile Passport and CLEAR. Each option is designed to make security clearance more seamless and lessen wait times, but each program has its own benefits.

Here's what to know about each of them and how to decide which of them is best for you.

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck is a program offered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). It allows pre-approved travelers to use "expedited" security lanes at airports within the United States. People who are enrolled in TSA PreCheck, unlike those in typical security lines, do not need to remove their shoes or jackets, and can typically keep liquids and electronics in their carry-on bag as it goes through the scanner.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for TSA PreCheck for $85. The $85 fee includes a five-year membership.

Global Entry

Global Entry is offered by United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP). It allows "pre-approved, low-risk travelers" to expedite customs and immigration upon entering the United States. This means that after international travel, Global Entry members have access to different lane -- that's usually faster -- to clear the customs process. Members can use automated kiosks at some airports to complete the entry process faster.

With the $100 fee to apply for Global Entry, travelers receive a five membership. They also receive enrollment in TSA PreCheck.

Mobile Passport

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) is an app that allows U.S. citizens and Canadian visitors to submit their passport information and any customs declaration forms electronically before arriving in the United States. This can help speed up the customs process and potentially reduce wait times at airports where the app is accepted.

MPC is free to use and can be downloaded on the Apple App Store and Android App Store.

CLEAR

CLEAR is a private security program that uses biometrics to help travelers bypass the standard security lines at some airports and venues. Members of the service use CLEAR dedicated lanes and biometric screening technology to verify their identity and get through security checkpoints faster. CLEAR can help people save time during the security screening process.

The service is offered for $189 per year.

In summary, each of these services offers something unique, but each has its place for travelers. TSA PreCheck is ideal for frequent flyers looking to avoid long security lines once arriving at the airport, Global Entry is likely best for international travelers looking to expedite the customs process, Mobile Passport Control is the best option for international travelers looking for a free service and CLEAR is a good option for people considering fast service with biometric technology.
